Known for
Harvard Business School professor who wrote the text portion of Business Policy: Text and Cases (with Edmund P. Learned, C. Roland Christensen, and William D. Guth) and is credited, with Igor Ansoff and Alfred Chandler, with founding the modern concept of business strategy. His matching of a firm's internal strengths and weaknesses to external opportunities and threats is one claimed origin of SWOT.
Caveat: The 1965 textbook contains neither a two-by-two SWOT matrix nor a SWOT procedure, and a 1965 Stanford Research Institute report (Stewart, Benepe, and Mitchell) is the other claimed origin.
