- Who Has the D?: How Clear Decision Roles Enhance Organizational Performance, Harvard Business Review, 2006
In Tactics of Organizational Politics
Ideas
RAPID decision roles. Rogers and Blenko assign each role in an important decision a letter: recommend, agree, perform, input, and decide. The person who holds the D is the single point of accountability who commits the organization to action, and those with an agree role hold a veto that obliges them to offer an alternative or escalate; they argue that making these roles explicit removes decision bottlenecks.
What it explains
Blenko and Rogers explain why decisions stall when nobody knows who decides, and why naming one owner and the other roles speeds them up. The article is practitioner advice from Bain consultants.
