Principles of sociotechnical design. Cherns's 1976 principles of sociotechnical design mostly stood the test of experience but needed revision: the principles governing the design process and the design team are bound up with those governing the design itself, and the organization's needs as a society deserve more attention. Caveat: The 1976 principles themselves were not read.

Principles of sociotechnical design. Cherns stated design principles such as minimal critical specification and control of variances close to their source. Caveat: Principles for design, not findings.

In this section, “read” means read by the Organizational Structures series: where a line says a work, or part of one, was not read, the series did not read it.
