Ideas
The entrepreneurial university. From five European universities visited twice between 1994 and 1996, Clark named five elements common to their transformation: a strengthened steering core, an expanded developmental periphery, a diversified funding base, a stimulated academic heartland, and an integrated entrepreneurial culture. Caveat: Five cases chosen because they had changed. Read in its abstract only.
The matrix of discipline and enterprise. Academic work is divided by discipline and by enterprise at once, so academic systems are large, permanent, unplanned matrix structures in which professors belong to both. Caveat: A cross-national synthesis, not a test. Only passages of the book were read.
Chair and department organization. The chair concentrates the responsibilities of the basic academic unit in one person, the chair holder, while the department spreads them among several professors of similar senior rank; chair organization, very old and long traditional in Europe, is a persistent source of personal dominance and local monopolies, and because of that failure of form an evolution from chair to department organization has been under way. Caveat: A cross-national synthesis, not a test. Only passages of the book were read.
In this section, “read” means read by the Organizational Structures series: where a line says a work, or part of one, was not read, the series did not read it.
