Ideas

Organizing for integrated solutions. Solutions providers organize customer-facing front-end units and back-end units that supply capabilities, and the back-end units can be external to the company. Caveat: A managerial article, of which only the opening (which names IBM, General Electric, Rolls-Royce, Ericsson, and EDS) and the endnotes were read.

Systems seller and systems integrator. Firms moving into solutions do not settle into either ideal type but combine vertical integration into services with systems integration. Caveat: Five firms.

In this section, “read” means read by the Organizational Structures series: where a line says a work, or part of one, was not read, the series did not read it.
