Known for

An American statistician and quality consultant who taught Japanese managers from 1950 to see production as one system linking suppliers, producers, and customers, and who carried Walter Shewhart's cycle of improvement into management practice, restating it as Plan, Do, Study, Act in 1993.

Caveat: Deming called the cycle the Shewhart cycle; the Plan, Do, Check, Act wording is often attributed to him, but he preferred Study to Check. Out of the Crisis first appeared in 1982 as Quality, Productivity, and Competitive Position.
