Information-processing theory of strategy and structure in multinationals.
Ideas
Information-processing fit for MNC matrix structures. Different types of matrix fit different MNC strategies by the information processing each requires, a model supported in 57 German matrix firms. Caveat: German firms only; compares matrix types, not matrix against other forms.
Matrix conflict is type-specific. Matrix firms do not have more conflict in general; only product-by-region matrices do. Caveat: German firms only.
Information-processing fit in multinationals. Strategy and structure fit in multinationals can be judged by whether the structure supplies the information processing the strategy needs, and fit so defined was generally confirmed among 34 firms. Caveat: 34 firms.
Revising Stopford and Wells. Some of the Stopford and Wells relationships hold and some do not, and the relative size of foreign manufacturing predicts structure. Caveat: 34 firms.
