Known for
An Italian-American physicist known for quick, approximate calculations from little data. At the Trinity test he dropped scraps of paper into the blast wave and, from how far they moved, estimated a yield of about ten thousand tons of TNT, roughly half the measured figure and within an order of magnitude. Estimation problems of this kind are now named after him.
