Ideas
Conditions for a working matrix. With Burton and Obel, the multi-contingency reading of when a matrix works. Caveat: Conceptual.
Multi-contingency model. Co-author of the third and fourth editions of Organizational Design: A Step-by-Step Approach. Caveat: A textbook; only its front matter and the publisher's description were read.
Diagnosing fit step by step. With Burton and Obel, a step-by-step design method in which an organization is assessed chapter by chapter on its contingencies; the design fits when the assessments fall in one column of their fit table (a simple configuration with a calm environment and a reactor strategy, functional with varied and defender, divisional with locally stormy and prospector, matrix with turbulent and analyzer), and misfits arise when they end up in different columns. Caveat: A textbook; only short passages of chapter 4 and its Table 4.1 were read, not the whole book; the rules are the authors' synthesis, not a test.
In this section, “read” means read by the Organizational Structures series: where a line says a work, or part of one, was not read, the series did not read it.
