Known for
A pioneer of quality management whose handbook became the field's reference. He generalized Vilfredo Pareto's observation about income into the principle of the vital few and the trivial many (later the useful many): a small share of causes accounts for most of the defects. He later framed quality management as a trilogy of planning, control, and improvement.
