Ideas

The constitutional history of the religious orders. Traced the orders' constitutions, among them the Cistercian Carta Caritatis, which kept each abbey autonomous, with no abbey subordinate to another, and held the order together by yearly visitation and a yearly general chapter, set against the centralized Cluny, the representative Dominicans, and the monarchical Society of Jesus. Caveat: A historian's lectures on constitutions as written, not a study of how the orders performed.
