Known for
Lead author, with C. Roland Christensen, Kenneth R. Andrews, and William D. Guth, of the Harvard Business School text that framed strategy as matching a company's strengths and weaknesses to the opportunities and threats in its environment, the four elements later drawn as SWOT.
Caveat: The Harvard origin of SWOT is contested: the book contains no SWOT matrix, a 1965 Stanford Research Institute report used a similar scheme, and a 2023 history calls the Harvard claim an academic urban legend.
