- The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information, Psychological Review 63(2), 1956
In Thinking Tools
Known for
A founder of cognitive psychology whose 1956 paper observed that people can hold about seven items in immediate memory and that the limit is set in chunks, meaningful units, not in bits, so recoding information into larger chunks extends what can be held.
Caveat: Later research puts working memory capacity lower, nearer four chunks, and Miller himself treated seven as a rough figure.
