Known for
An Italian poet and one of the first Renaissance humanists. In the 1330s he began to describe the centuries after the fall of Rome as an age of darkness set against the light of classical antiquity, which gave later historians the three-part scheme of ancient, medieval, and modern; the Latin term medium aevum appeared only in the seventeenth century.
