Known for

With William J. J. Gordon he developed Synectics at Arthur D. Little's Invention Design Unit in the 1950s, a method of group problem solving that uses analogy and metaphor to make the strange familiar and the familiar strange. His manual sets out its meeting practices, among them the itemized response, which answers a new idea first with its advantages and then with its concerns phrased as problems to solve.
