How the location of R&D authority shapes innovation.

Ideas

Formal R&D structure and inventor networks. With Argyres and Silverman, found that centralizing R&D budget authority connected inventor networks and broadened innovation, and that decentralizing did not reverse the effect. Caveat: A quantitative study of one function, research and development, in diversified firms. Only its abstracts were read, and they do not describe the sample.

Centralized research. With Arora and Belenzon, found that centralized firms invested more in research and patented more per R&D dollar than decentralized firms. Caveat: A large-sample study of American firms only, with centralization inferred from patent assignment rather than organization charts. Read in its abstract only.

In this section, “read” means read by the Organizational Structures series: where a line says a work, or part of one, was not read, the series did not read it.
