An Oxford philosopher of mind, known for The Concept of Mind (1949), he distinguished a thin description of an action, which reports only the observable behavior, from a thick one, which adds the context and intention that make the action what it is. Clifford Geertz took the distinction into anthropology as thick description in 1973.
