A founder of clinical epidemiology and of evidence-based medicine, which began in his work at McMaster University on critically appraising the medical literature. His 1986 paper set out rules of evidence for grading clinical recommendations, and with Gordon Guyatt he published a hierarchy of evidence in 1995 that put systematic reviews and randomized trials at the top.
