An Irish-born economist and Royal Marines officer whose essay on the corn trade gave an early statement of comparative advantage, two years before David Ricardo's Principles (an anonymous pamphlet of 1814 is earlier still): a country gains by importing goods it could produce itself, if it can obtain them more cheaply by exporting what it produces with greater relative efficiency.
