A mathematician who conceived the Monte Carlo method at Los Alamos in 1946 while estimating the odds of winning at solitaire by playing it many times, and saw that electronic computers made such sampling practical. John von Neumann took up the idea, Nicholas Metropolis named it, and the 1949 paper was the first unclassified account.
