An economist who works on game theory, industrial organization, and auctions. With Paul Milgrom he proposed that all license auctions close at once, when no new bid arrives on any license, the core of the simultaneous multiple-round auction the FCC adopted for spectrum sales from 1994. The two shared the 2020 Nobel Memorial Prize for improving auction theory and inventing new auction formats.
