Research, with Maxim Sytch, on how matrix organizations form alliances and on the evidence for matrix designs.
Ideas
Matrix experience and complex alliances. With Sytch and Zajac, found that matrix firms are more likely to enter complex alliances, but the stock market discounts matrix firms in multifunctional alliances. Caveat: A quantitative study of many firms' alliances, with interviews; the stock market's reaction is an indirect measure of value.
The thin evidence on matrix performance. With Sytch, reviewed the research on matrix organizations and concluded that robust evidence on their performance is scant: most claims rest on anecdotes or single cases. Caveat: A narrative review with no stated search method.
