Known for
The founder of fractal geometry. His 1963 study of cotton prices showed that price changes follow heavy-tailed distributions, with far more extreme moves than the normal curve allows; in The Fractal Geometry of Nature he also gave the Lindy name to the rule that some things' expected future life grows with their past life.
Caveat: His Lindy rule applied to things bounded by a producer's life; the broader Lindy effect, for anything without a natural limit, is Nassim Nicholas Taleb's extension.
