Ideas
Hierarchy and upward information flow. Taller hierarchies both push middle managers to pass more suggestions upward and inhibit them through evaluation apprehension; which effect prevails depends on conditions. Caveat: One firm's field data plus experiments.
New forms of organizing. Co-author with Puranam and Alexy. Caveat: Conceptual, with illustrative contrasts and no test.
Status in online communities. With Smirnova and Sorenson, found on Stack Overflow and in two experiments that as people rise in status, further status comes increasingly from actions that are hard to evaluate. Caveat: A question-and-answer community.
Getting better at flatter. Reitzig's guide addresses when, why, and how organizations should move to flatter designs, including when flat structures can beat more centralized ones. Caveat: Known only from its chapter list and a review by Alexy (2022); the book itself was not read.
In this section, “read” means read by the Organizational Structures series: where a line says a work, or part of one, was not read, the series did not read it.
