Ideas
The matrix as a transitory form. A matrix can be a stage that gives way to a simpler, still multidimensional structure, as at FMC Subsea between 2011 and 2015. Caveat: One case.
Organization design as simplifying complex systems. Applies axiomatic design to organizations: complexity is coupling between functions or goals, design should minimize it, and the simple, functional, divisional, matrix, front-back, and modular forms can be compared by design structure matrices; he also adapts requisite organization to project-based firms as a layered modular structure. Caveat: A design textbook. Only its chapter abstracts were read.
In this section, “read” means read by the Organizational Structures series: where a line says a work, or part of one, was not read, the series did not read it.
