OKRs

Thinking Tools2.2 Writing the Goal StatementAlso known as Objectives and Key Results

Developed by Andrew S. Grove at Intel (High Output Management, 1983) and carried to Google and beyond by John Doerr (Measure What Matters, 2018).

Sets a few qualitative objectives, each with three to five measurable key results, shares them openly across the organization, and grades them every quarter.

When to reach for it

When a growing organization's teams are pulling in different directions and its goals need to be both ambitious and measurable.

How it runs

  1. Set three to five qualitative objectives.
  2. Give each three to five measurable key results.
  3. Have teams set OKRs aligned to those above.
  4. Publish every OKR across the organization.
  5. Check progress weekly, and grade at quarter end.
  6. Keep the grades apart from performance reviews.
