Thinking Tools5.2 Selecting the Right Decision ToolsAlso known as PMI

Originated by Edward de Bono (CoRT Thinking Lessons, 1973).

Lists the pluses, minuses, and merely interesting points of an option, each in a short timed burst, before anyone passes judgment on it.

When to reach for it

Snap verdicts are forming about a proposal, and a few minutes of deliberate scanning would show what the first reaction missed.

How it runs

  1. State the option.
  2. List pluses for two minutes.
  3. List minuses for two minutes.
  4. List interesting points that are neither good nor bad.
  5. Revisit the first reaction in light of all three lists.
