Originated by Sohail Inayatullah (Causal Layered Analysis: Poststructuralism as Method, 1998).
Works an issue down through four layers: the headline view, the systems behind it, the worldview that frames those systems, and the myth or metaphor underneath.
When to reach for it
Trend analysis has run out of insight, and the question seems to turn on assumptions people hold so deeply they never state them.
How it runs
- Write the official, headline view of the issue.
- Describe the systems that produce that view.
- Name the worldview that makes those systems seem natural.
- Name the myth or metaphor beneath the worldview.
- Imagine alternative futures by changing the deeper layers.
