Developed by Aubrey L. Mendelow (Environmental Scanning: The Impact of the Stakeholder Concept, 1981) and popularized by Gerry Johnson and Kevan Scholes (Exploring Corporate Strategy, fifth edition, 1999) and Colin Eden and Fran Ackermann (Making Strategy, 1998).
Plots stakeholders by their power over an initiative and their interest in it, then gives each quadrant an approach: manage closely, keep satisfied, keep informed, or monitor.
When to reach for it
When an initiative has many stakeholders and effort is going to vocal critics while the real decision makers are undermanaged.
How it runs
- List every person or group with a stake.
- Rate each one's power over the outcome.
- Rate each one's interest in the outcome.
- Plot them on the grid.
- Set an engagement action for each high-priority stakeholder.
