The creator of TRIZ, the theory of inventive problem solving, which he built from the study of thousands of patents. TRIZ holds that technical systems evolve by knowable patterns and that inventive problems turn on contradictions, which can be resolved by a small set of principles (the 40 inventive principles, set in 1971), separation of the conflicting requirements, and ARIZ, his step-by-step algorithm.
