TRIZ Trimming

Thinking Tools4.4 Refining Ideas Into Practical SolutionsAlso known as Trimming

From the Leningrad TRIZ school's function analysis and trimming, credited chiefly to Simon S. Litvin, and set out by Darrell Mann (Hands-On Systematic Innovation, 2002).

Removes a component from a product, process, or organization by handing its function to something already present, cutting cost and complexity while keeping the function.

When to reach for it

Costs must come down in a design, process, or structure that carries too many parts or steps, without losing what the system does.

How it runs

  1. Map each component and the function it performs.
  2. Ask whether another component or outside resource could do that function.
  3. Reassign the function where one can.
  4. Remove the component that is now redundant.
  5. Confirm the function still works, then look for the next trim.
