Critical Response Process

Thinking Tools4.4 Refining Ideas Into Practical SolutionsAlso known as Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process

Developed by Liz Lerman at Dance Exchange (Toward a Process for Critical Response, 1993) and written up with John Borstel (Liz Lerman's Critical Response Process, 2003).

A four-stage feedback protocol: responders say what was meaningful, the maker asks questions, responders ask neutral questions, and opinions come only with the maker's permission.

When to reach for it

When a draft, design, or plan needs feedback that improves it without the critics taking it over.

How it runs

  1. Responders state what struck them as meaningful.
  2. The maker asks their own questions about the work.
  3. Responders ask neutral questions about the maker's intent.
  4. Responders ask permission before offering each opinion.
  5. A facilitator holds the order throughout.
