After-Action Review

Thinking Tools6.4 Conducting Follow-Up and Taking FeedbackAlso known as AAR

From United States Army training doctrine, as described by Gordon R. Sullivan and Michael V. Harper (Hope Is Not a Method, 1996).

A short team review held right after an action: what was meant to happen, what did, why the two differed, and what to change, with rank left at the door.

When to reach for it

Right after a project, release, incident, sale, or exercise, while the people involved still remember what happened and why.

How it runs

  1. Hold the review within hours of the action.
  2. Bring the team that acted and any direct observers.
  3. Set ground rules: no rank, no blame, specifics only.
  4. Compare what was supposed to happen with what did.
  5. Explain the gaps and agree what to keep and what to improve.
