Thinking Tools6.4 Conducting Follow-Up and Taking FeedbackAlso known as Start, Stop, Continue, Sailboat Retrospective, 4Ls

From Norman L. Kerth (Project Retrospectives, 2001), Esther Derby and Diana Larsen (Agile Retrospectives, 2006), and Luke Hohmann's Speed Boat game (Innovation Games, 2006).

Gives a team a rotating set of reflection templates, such as Start, Stop, Continue or Sailboat, each surfacing a different side of recent work and ending in owned actions.

When to reach for it

When a team closes a cycle, phase, or milestone and needs a short, regular review that does not go stale.

How it runs

  1. Decide the focus: actions, mood, forces, or principles.
  2. Pick the format that fits the focus.
  3. Have everyone write items silently.
  4. Share, cluster by theme, and discuss.
  5. Agree on actions with owners and dates.
  6. Close with appreciation.
