Originated by Edward T. Hall (The Silent Language, 1959).
Studies how people use space and distance with one another, and how the layout of a room or building shapes the conversations and behavior inside it.
When to reach for it
Offices, meeting rooms, or customer spaces are producing the wrong behavior, or a team works across cultures with different norms of distance.
How it runs
- Name the behavior the space should support.
- Note the cultural norms of the people using it.
- Set distances, sight lines, and territory to fit.
- Mock up or pilot the arrangement.
- Watch how people actually use it and adjust.
