Originated by Robert P. Crawford (The Techniques of Creative Thinking, 1954).
Lists every attribute of a product, service, or process, then varies each attribute in turn to generate new versions in an orderly sweep.
When to reach for it
Redesign or improvement work keeps producing small variations on the existing thing, and a broader, more orderly sweep of options is needed.
How it runs
- Pick the thing to redesign.
- List its attributes, ten to twenty of them.
- List alternative values for each attribute.
- Generate variants by changing one attribute at a time.
- Score the variants and combine the best changes.
