Murder Board

Thinking Tools5.3 Validating Impact and Execution

From United States military and government briefing practice; the term is Pentagon usage, and NASA credits Hans Mark with building it out of the tiger team.

Puts a single brief, estimate, or plan in front of a panel chosen to question it hard, so every weak point surfaces in rehearsal before the real audience sees it.

When to reach for it

Before a briefing, board paper, or testimony goes to an audience that will probe it, when its authors have only reviewed it themselves.

How it runs

  1. Recruit three to six skeptical reviewers new to the work.
  2. Brief them on the product.
  3. Let them question every assumption, source, and conclusion under time pressure.
  4. Note each weak point the authors did not anticipate.
  5. Revise, and repeat with a fresh panel if needed.
