Developed by Susan Michie, Maartje M. van Stralen, and Robert West (The Behaviour Change Wheel, 2011).
Explains a behavior as the product of capability, opportunity, and motivation, finds which of the three is lacking, and aims the intervention at that gap.
When to reach for it
When a desired behavior, such as using a new process or system, is not happening and the cause could be skill, circumstance, or will.
How it runs
- Define the target behavior precisely.
- Assess capability, physical and psychological.
- Assess opportunity, physical and social.
- Assess motivation, reflective and automatic.
- Name the gap that binds.
- Design an intervention aimed at that gap.
