Force Field Analysis

Thinking Tools4.1 Root Causes and the Case for Going Back

Originated by Kurt Lewin (Frontiers in Group Dynamics, 1947).

Lists the forces pushing toward a change and those holding it back, scores each, and points the effort at weakening the strongest restraints.

When to reach for it

Everyone says they support a change, yet it is stuck or likely to stall, and nobody has named what is holding it in place.

How it runs

  1. State the change as a specific end state.
  2. List every force pushing toward it.
  3. List every force pushing against it, including fears and habits.
  4. Score each force from one to five and total both sides.
  5. Pick two or three moves, most aimed at the restraints.
  6. Give each move an owner and an expected effect.
