Drama Triangle

Thinking Tools4.1 Root Causes and the Case for Going BackAlso known as Karpman Drama Triangle

Developed by Stephen B. Karpman (Fairy Tales and Script Drama Analysis, 1968).

Maps recurring conflict as three roles (victim, persecutor, and rescuer) that people rotate through, so each can see their part and step out of it.

When to reach for it

When the same interpersonal conflict keeps recurring at work and the people in it trade blame and rescue without resolving anything.

How it runs

  1. Identify who is playing victim, persecutor, and rescuer.
  2. Notice the role taken by default.
  3. Watch how the roles rotate.
  4. Choose the counter-move: own power, own vulnerability, or trust others' capacity.
  5. Hold the new stance without waiting for others to change.
