From Joseph Campbell's monomyth (The Hero with a Thousand Faces, 1949), cut into a working template by Christopher Vogler (The Writer's Journey, 1992).
A story template in which a protagonist leaves the familiar, meets an ordeal that changes them, and returns with something of value, used to shape change and brand narratives.
When to reach for it
When people must be carried from one belief to another over time, as in a change program, a founding story, or a keynote.
How it runs
- Cast the audience or customer as the protagonist, not the leader.
- Describe their ordinary world before the story starts.
- Name the call: the event that makes now the time.
- Acknowledge their reluctance before pressing on.
- Map the ordeal, the change, and what they bring back.
