Trust Equation

Thinking Tools6.3 Implementing the Action Plan

Developed by David H. Maister, Charles H. Green, and Robert M. Galford (The Trusted Advisor, 2000).

Scores trustworthiness as credibility plus reliability plus intimacy, divided by self-orientation, which shows which factor is holding a relationship back.

When to reach for it

Working relationships with a client, sponsor, or partner feel distant despite real competence, and it is unclear why trust is not growing.

How it runs

  1. Pick one specific relationship.
  2. Rate credibility as the other person sees it.
  3. Rate reliability and intimacy the same way.
  4. Rate how self-focused they see you.
  5. Find the weakest factor and plan a change aimed at it.
  6. Track the relationship over time.
